BetterLesson, a leading provider of high-quality virtual and in-person K–12 professional learning, announces a partnership with Kikori, a community-driven platform that provides experiential social-emotional learning (SEL) activities and curriculum for schools and districts. Together, the partnership provides educators with self-directed SEL professional learning opportunities that incorporate the activities and tools created by Kikori.

According to the Education Week Research Center, 47 percent of educators said that to date, the professional development they’ve received surrounding SEL was only “somewhat effective” and just 12 percent of educators described the opportunities as “very effective.”

SEL Tools for Educators Nationwide

“Our partnership with BetterLesson brings SEL-focused professional learning opportunities to educators across the country,” said Kendra Bostick, CEO of Kikori. “Educators recognize the importance of SEL, but don’t always have the time or resources to implement meaningful change. To address this challenge, we’re partnering with BetterLesson and providing self-directed professional learning around SEL with step-by-step support.”

Kikori provides educators with engaging activities that involve active play and intentional reflection, organized into daily calendars and planners to make implementing SEL easy, relevant and fun for educators and students alike. With more than 1,000 community-building activities, educators can access impactful supplemental or comprehensive curriculum right at their fingertips.

Kikori helps educators build relationships with their students from Daily Greeting to Closing Circle through team building and leadership activities, with a focus on prevention rather than a reaction to classroom behavioural needs.

Meaningful and Comprehensive Tools for Teachers

Through the partnership, Kikori’s lesson plans are available to educators using BetterLesson’s BL Connect, a library of research-based on-demand courses designed to provide every educator with the tools and resources needed to create a student-centred classroom. Leaders and instructional coaches can access a comprehensive dashboard to see the outcomes their teachers are working toward and their professional learning progress.

“At BetterLesson, we’re always searching for new ways to provide meaningful professional learning opportunities,” said Kari Horn Lehman, Director of Partnerships at BetterLesson. “Through partnering with Kikori, teachers of all grade levels can now create an SEL-focused curriculum and receive the support needed to put Kikori to work in their classrooms—connecting teachers with their students more than ever before.”

BetterLesson provides 1:1 virtual coaching and small-group professional learning to help educators create classrooms where students drive their own learning, exercise choice and ownership and develop the personal agency they need to succeed. They provide job-embedded support across a wide range of topics including instructional leadership, responsive and inclusive practices, flexible instructional models and curriculum and academic content.

BetterLesson has partnered with more than 30,000 educators across 47 states as well as D.C., Puerto Rico and 5 countries internationally. The company hosts a growing library of evidence-based strategies with 500,000 average monthly users. BetterLesson values the pursuit of educational equity and is dedicated to ensuring every student—regardless of race, income, national origin, gender identity, ability or location—has access to an excellent education.

Kikori is an award-winning, female-founded, Public Benefit Corporation committed to democratizing experiential education and helping youths connect with themselves, others and the planet. Vocabulary.com, the leading educational destination for mastering words, has announced its newest personalized learning product, VocabTrainer. VocabTrainer uses Vocabulary.com’s award-winning adaptive engine, insights from billions of data points and gamified instruction, to help learners boost their word knowledge.

Mastery over memorization

With each question a learner answers, VocabTrainer evaluates vocabulary proficiency on a 20-level scale and identifies gaps in knowledge. It then uses those insights to craft a personalized plan of daily exercises that incorporates the words the student is ready to learn.

As learners answer questions correctly and progress toward mastering a word, VocabTrainer adapts to pose harder questions that build on their knowledge. Students are tested on the definitions, peripheral meanings and nuances of terms, enabling them to cultivate an understanding of words from every angle.

Additionally, VocabTrainer provides personalized reporting that tracks progress and proficiency and lets students compare their growth to other learners around the world. As learners progress through rounds of questions, they receive updated reports that show how their score and vocabulary knowledge has changed over time.

Learners who want to improve their vocabulary can try out ten VocabTrainer questions per day. The full benefits of VocabTrainer are available to learners who have purchased a subscription and are included in Vocabulary.com classroom and school licenses for all teachers and students.

“Focusing on mastery instead of memorising words is fundamental to how Vocabulary.com builds lasting literacy skills. To that end, we created VocabTrainer as a systematic and engaging way for learners to attain a deeper understanding of words through personalized and gamified instruction,” said Paul Mishkin, CEO of IXL Learning, Vocabulary.com’s parent company. “Whether you are an independent learner looking to build a more robust vocabulary or an educator striving for classroom excellence, VocabTrainer provides daily exercises that continuously develop word knowledge and help students succeed.”

How schools and independent learners use Vocabulary.com

In addition to VocabTrainer, Vocabulary.com offers even more instruction, review and assessment activities. The Flashcards and Practice features expose learners to new words in multiple contexts and provide students with additional opportunities to boost their vocabulary independently. Other tools, including Vocabulary.com’s dictionary and Word of the Day, provide approachable definitions and a daily dose of vocabulary that broaden literacy skills. The platform also provides English language learners with a variety of study materials and activities that build a well-rounded vocabulary. As students complete assignments, detailed reporting makes it easier for educators to see each learner’s performance and uncover class trends.

Additionally, learners can use Vocabulary.com’s adaptive test prep plans to master the words they are most likely to see on the SAT and ACT exams. Vocabulary.com also hosts the Vocabulary Bowl and Vocabulary Jams, which educators use to gamify instruction and inspire students to master words beyond what was assigned.

Vocabulary.com’s award-winning platform helps learners systematically improve their vocabulary. Adaptive, individualized and interactive, Vocabulary.com seamlessly integrates with any school curriculum, helping students master the academic vocabulary they’ll encounter in literature, textbooks and standardized tests. The Vocabulary.com dictionary teaches more than 16,000 words and provides approachable definitions that make them more interesting to learn. To date, nearly 4 million learners in 56,000 schools worldwide have answered more than 7 billion questions on Vocabulary.com. Vocabulary.com joined the IXL Learning family in 2020.

Boy enjoying metaverse, surrounded by digital icons.

Spotselfie, the Real-World Social Metaverse, announced their Meta Store feature. The innovative addition will give college students an opportunity to earn income through the platform’s metaverse advertising portal and have the ability to launch Web3 businesses across college campuses.

Spotselfie Meta StoreTM feature empowers individuals to claim digital land on their campus with the built-in option to advertise student organizations and student-owned businesses. Through this feature, students are also able to create their own digital store, sell products and services, and advertise their likenesses.

In addition, this new feature will provide students with the opportunity to earn revenue share with existing advertisers on the Spotselfie platform.

Giving young people a headstart in the Metaverse

“It’s important to get students prepared for the future of the Metaverse. That begins with having the ability to promote their digital twin as a small business before larger organizations gain a foothold in the Metaverse digital landscape” said Ray Shingler, Co-Founder, Vice President, and Director of Product Development for Spotselfie.

“Our aim is to help decentralize the larger players in the Web3 industry and allow organizations of all sizes to participate in its development. The Meta Store will accelerate new entrepreneurial opportunities for students while furthering adoption and ushering in this new generation of Web3.”

A student’s first meta store is free when creating an account. After registering, a student can then go claim a 100-foot diameter circle at a GPS location on campus, where they can then build their augmented reality (AR) meta store. A student can then drop AR immersive advertisements for their own merchandise, or offer services to their colleagues.

Digital autonomy and entrepreneurship opportunities

The owner of the store will retain 100% of all revenue generated from their services within that designated area.

“This new feature will give students an avenue to amplify their shops and services while simultaneously bridging the gap between the traditional business model and the new digital world,” added Shingler. “Students will be able to advertise exclusive resources and goods such as tutoring, tasking, merchandise and their organization’s offerings all within their own metaverse store on campus.

SpotselfieTM is a patented augmented reality real-world social metaverse that allows users to post virtual objects, pictures, videos, stickers, and other digital material geotagged to locations around the globe. Created specifically for live social interaction, this patented technology allows other users on the app to view the posted content in AR via their own phones, as they walk throughout the digital landscape simultaneously.

The platform-wide enhancements leverage the technology’s real-time feedback and journalistic approach to writing, offering a modernized one-on-one approach to pedagogy in the classroom.

Pressto AI was founded in 2021 by Daniel Stedman, the co-founder of Brooklyn Magazine and Northside Media. Pressto develops proprietary educational technology that is designed to transform the way writing is taught and learned in the digital classroom. Pressto provides an environment that makes writing fun and purposeful for students and time-saving and easier for teachers. Pressto’s Junior Journalist Program provides students with real-world, project-based learning opportunities in conjunction with local Mayor’s offices, and the platform was acknowledged as an honorable mention in the Education Category of Fast Company’s 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards.

Waverly Labs, pioneers of smart translation solutions, is expanding its mission to break down language barriers with the launch of Forum, a mobile and web-based app that helps unlimited numbers of people communicate with ease.

Designed for use in lecturers, auditoriums, and theaters, as well as in-person and/or remote meetings (working alongside platforms such as Zoom, Google Chat, and Microsoft Teams), it facilitates communication in 20 languages and 42 dialects.

How to use Forum

Forum is extremely easy to download and use and allows users to either host or attend a session. Once a session is created, participants can join by simply scanning a QR code or entering a meeting code generated by the host.

They then select which language they want to receive, and Forum provides text and audio translation direct to their device. At the end of the session, users have the option to receive a full transcript of the conversations.

Forum is a highly flexible platform that facilitates one-to-many, one-to-one, and many-to-many communications. It is suitable for a host of use cases, across multiple verticals and debuts with various tiered plans to suit all needs.

Multi-lingual Meetings

A number of companies have partnered with Waverly Labs to trial Forum to streamline meetings. The Japanese company Uniqlo uses Forum for in-person meetings within its New York office. In this use case, the host acts like a lecturer, communicating in their native tongue with participants dialing into their meetings and receiving translations on their devices while in the room together. Participants can follow along on text or audio using any earphones that can connect to their device.

With employees all over the globe, French powerhouse Chanel leverage Forum for international multi-person, multi-lingual meetings. Used alongside Google Chat, Forum is a great second-screen solution, allowing users to participate in video calls while receiving translations on their devices or web browsers.

Bilingual Broadway

“A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum” – Well, now Forum is back on Broadway! The Perfect Crime, the longest-running play on Broadway, relies on Forum to enhance the experience it can provide its international visitors. Audience members have the option to join a session during the play and hear translations on their devices connected to headphones.

Leveraged In Lectures

Forum is also a powerful tool for lectures, speaker presentations, and events. In this one-to-many use case, a speaker starts as a session that audience members can join. Translations in their chosen language are received directly on their device as text and audio. A session can be “broadcast” in multiple languages simultaneously.

“We are on a mission to bridge global communications by building a world without language barriers. Forum is an exciting addition to our portfolio and ideally placed to help achieve this goal,” said Andrew Ochoa, Founder, and CEO of Waverly Labs. “Forum leverages our core translation technology that uses the latest speech recognition and machine translations in a compelling and easy-to-use app without the need for any hardware or equipment.”

Forum has free and tiered feature plans. It is always free for people to download, join sessions, and listen and stream translations (text) on their devices. Hosting sessions and sending communications for translation requires a plan.

Plans vary based on the number of participants and languages they can support, the number of minutes of translation available per month, the number of sessions that can be hosted per month, and the ability to unlock additional features such as vocabulary preferences. Free, Personal, Professional, and Premium plans are available, ranging from $0 to $34.99 per month. Customized “Team Plans” are also available to individual companies to best suit their needs.

Forum joins the Waverly Labs portfolio of translation solutions that includes SUBTITLES, a two-sided customer service counter display facilitating safe in-person interactions, and the AMBASSADOR INTERPRETER, the over-the-ear device providing near-simultaneous audio and text translations. Its fast, fluid and fluent translations are highly accurate and made possible thanks to its patented translation technology that combines the latest speech recognition and machine translation.

Its core technology captures speech, processes it in the cloud, and delivers translations to various devices and solutions optimized for different use cases. It is so fast and accurate it can handle ongoing fluid conversations with people in a natural and unimpaired way. Highly sophisticated, it can translate conversations with multiple users, receiving different language translations simultaneously.

Waverly Labs offers audio and text translations in over 20 languages and 42 dialects, including English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic, Greek, Russian, Hindi, Turkish, Polish, Chinese Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, Hebrew, Thai, Vietnamese and Dutch.

Forum is currently available as an IOS and web-based app, with an Android version launching at the end of Q1. Its additional advanced features include:

  • Versatile speech recognition and transmission options
    • Hold-to-Talk: Hold the mic button to capture your voice and release it to translate.
Pause-to-Translate: Simply talk and following a 2- second pause in speaking, translations will be completed without the need to hold any mics or press any buttons.
    • Live Translation: In this mode, Forum translates as you speak in real-time.
  • Vocabulary Preferences: Providing great control over terminology and decency.
    • Profanity filter: Provides the option to block any words or phrases not wanted in a chat.
    • Custom Terms and Definitions: Add uncommon terms that are regularly used, such as names, acronyms, expressions, and slang, to personalize and increase the accuracy of your experience.
  • Transcripts: Past conversations are available as transcripts. You can see the messages displayed in all the participants’ languages during the session.
  • Host Controls: The HOST speaker has complete control to mute the audience and lock the session so no other participant joins during the speech.

Waverly Labs, a tech startup at the forefront of voice and language products for professionals and teams, was founded in 2014 by Andrew Ochoa (CEO) and Sergio Del Río (VP of Product). Between 2016–2020, they introduced the world’s first translation earbuds, Pilot Smart Earbuds, and Ambassador Interpreter, establishing the category and shipping over 50,000 units worldwide.

As experts in speech translation, Waverly Labs is now introducing a suite of voice and translation solutions to meet the needs of professionals across various industries, including education, hospitality, conferences & events, and remote meetings.

Graduation caps in the sky.

Graduation is an important milestone in most people’s lives. And, as such, it should be celebrated in the best way possible. Whether you are looking to host a virtual event, have an intimate gathering with your family and friends, or throw the graduation party of the year, there is a must that can’t miss: custom announcements.

Tailored announcements are a great way to let your loved ones know of your achievements and give them the chance to make this day extra special. In this guide, you’ll find all you need to know about making your graduation announcements even more memorable!

Draw Inspiration From Your Own Journey as a Student

Although nearly four in ten US citizens aged 25 and over hold a bachelor’s degree, every person’s student journey is unique. Whether you have followed a lifelong passion or you opted for a vocational degree, you might consider drawing inspiration from your college experience to create unique and memorable graduation announcements.

A great way to do this is to include meaningful photos of snaps of your daily life as a student. Alternatively, you could choose a pattern or color scheme that reminds you of your alma mater – which takes us to the next point!

Choose a Pattern or Color Theme

Graduation announcements can become unique keepsakes – for yourself and future generations. That is why you should consider choosing the color scheme and pattern for your announcements wisely.

A great option is to draw inspiration from the colors that represent your school or university, or those that match your graduation gown. For example, if you are graduating from Yale University, you might consider sending out Yale Blue announcements. Alternatively, you could use the color of the subject of the degree being awarded, which is usually the same as the one on your gown.

Take Advantage of Customizable Templates

If you are looking for a graduation invitation with customized designs, you might consider taking advantage of customizable templates. This option can help you save precious time in the frenzy that the period before, during, and after your graduation can be.

Customizable templates are created by expert designers and bring balance and professionalism to any of your graduation engagements. However, these templates can be easily customizable and allow you to add your details and personal touches.

Add DIY and Personal Details

Looking to make your invitation announcements extra special? Consider the benefits of adding DIY or personalized details. For example, you could add a Polaroid photo that pictures you and the receiver, or you could add a meaningful or funny hand-drawn sketch.

The opportunities to make your graduation announcement unique are endless – just let your creativity run free and put your DIY skills to the test!

Choose a Font or Opt for Handwriting Names and Addresses

Although the aesthetics of your graduation announcements count, it is also important to add key details about when and where the graduation will take place. And, if you are planning to host a graduation party, you might also need to specify the party’s time, date, and address.

Choosing a clear and readable font is, of course, important. However, if you are looking to make your announcements both efficient and unique, consider the benefits of handwriting the notes on your invites!

Use Online Announcement Makers

If you have a vision in mind, you can rest assured that there are plenty of software and graphic design platforms that allow you to design and bring to life your custom announcements. This is the best option if you have enough time to learn how to use these tools or if you are already confident in your graphic design skills.

Send Out Virtual Graduation Announcements

Virtual graduations have never been more popular! With many students opting for online learning courses and virtual degrees, celebrations for academic achievements are also moving to the digital space.

If you are looking for a great way to celebrate the end of your journey as an eLearning student and you wish to host a virtual party, you might also consider sending out virtual announcements! You can do so by creating your own design using online graphic design platforms or by taking advantage of customizable templates.

Keep One of the Invites for Yourself

Your graduation invitations or announcements can be great keepsakes to treasure your whole life and pass on to the next generations! To make this precious heirloom even more unique, consider keeping an extra initiation for yourself and asking fellow students, teachers, tutors, and professors to add a personal note for you to keep.

Some great options are to ask for a signature or dedication, leave a wish, or pass on advice new graduates might need when entering the workforce.

Add Photos

Nothing makes graduation announcements unique as a photo! If you are unsure about the best snaps to add to your design, consider opting for a professional portrait or a candid snap that summarizes your time at university or high school.

Get Your Announcements Professionally Printed

Lastly, don’t forget to get your announcements professionally printed! After having put all that work into designing, customizing, and finishing your designs, printing them at home can lead to poor results! Instead, work with a specialized printer to send out memorable, long-lasting, and high-quality graduation announcements!
