We’ve been fans of Bloomist, an online retailer We’ve been fans of Bloomist, an online retailer for sustainably and responsibly made goods for the home and garden, since it launched in 2018, so we’re thrilled to have cofounder Alex Bates answer our Quick Takes questionnaire.

Alex is a master of sourcing products that have a human touch and timeless appeal. But it’s her obsession with gardening that we’re delving into today. From April to December, the Manhattanite decamps for her little cottage on Fire Island, where she works from her front porch—and takes many breaks to putter around in the garden.

To read more about Alex's tips and tricks and the wisdom she's gained over the years, head to Gardenista.com - link in bio.

What happens when you assemble and photograph foun What happens when you assemble and photograph found bits of nature every single day for 12 years and counting? Mary Jo Hoffman calls her art—as well as her blog and her new book—"Still," and writes that her practice is not only “a respite from the enervating buzz of contemporary life,” but a way of paying attention. “Finding each day’s subject requires me to live more often than not in a heightened state of awareness that makes me extraordinarily happy.”

Her new book, "Still: The Art of Noticing," is out now from Phaidon Press. Scroll through for a look at some of Mary Jo's stunning photographs.

In the latest installment of her "Garden from Scra In the latest installment of her "Garden from Scratch" column, Clare Coulson gives us 7 ways to save money when designing a garden.

In her words: "The cost of making a garden from scratch can be as much as a full house renovation. It can also cost next to nothing.

By being savvy with plants and materials and learning to do jobs yourself, you can create an outdoor space with loads of charm and character, one that will also be far more personal as you will have created it over time yourself."

A career in art direction is a useful grounding fo A career in art direction is a useful grounding for anybody wishing to go into garden design. Sheila Jack’s career shift was not so much a break as a continuum—of research, editing, and presentation. Before designing the pages of Vogue magazine, her first job was for the architect Norman Foster, and these visual strands from the past feed into her present-day career as a landscape designer.

Head to Gardenista to read about the project which turned Sheila’s design ideas into something more three-dimensional: her own urban garden. Link to full story in bio.
